Recently struck a Facebook bargain with a guy (great to work with, forgot his name) to grab one specific old-school Critical Hit ASL module. He didn’t want split the bundle, so I said screw it, bought the whole lot because the price was too hard to pass up. Price? $200 flat for about 13 items. You tell me below if it was a good deal … I think it was.
I sometimes look for older Critical Hit stuff, for several reasons. Hate the new overpriced junk with their awful panel maps and inferior counters. I even did a whole series ranking third-party counters … Critical Hit came in dead last. Just bad counters. But the older stuff? It’s got some charm, and better counters in my opinion. Fold-out matte maps (no glossy panels), better layouts, some cool scenarios.
So let’s roll through what came in this haul.
- Ordeal Before Shuri: Okinawa, 1945. Marines vs. Japanese. Old-school fold-out map. No counters.
- Those Ragged Bloody Heroes: New Guinea, 1942. Australian 7th Div vs. Japanese.
- Ruweisat Ridge: First Battle of El Alamein, 1942. Hand-painted DTO map, kind of artsy, kind of funky. I dig it.
- Uncommon Valor: Iwo Jima, 1945. Marines vs. Japanese. Slightly faded but in good shape. Says “large hexes,” but they’re pretty normal.
- Blood and Iron: Okinawa, 1944. 27th Infantry Division. Again, slopes everywhere. No counters.
- High Ground (Heat of Battle): Eight scenarios, no counters, but includes rare hardmounted boards I and II.
- Pointe du Hoc (2nd Edition): Normandy, 1944. 7th Ranger Battalion climbin’ cliffs and finding unmanned guns.
- Pointe du Hoc Gamer’s Guide (2nd Edition): Normandy, 1944. Two bonus scenarios, probably some articles.
- Pointe du Hoc Fulfillment Kit: Normandy, 1944. Scenarios/rules for First Wave at Omaha owners?
- Pointe du Hoc (“Retro BAR Gunner” Edition): Normandy, 1944. Another version with counters. That makes three copies of Pointe du Hoc now.
- Omaha West Map Upgrade Set: Normandy, 1944. Three “remastered” map panels. No idea what’s different, but they were included.
- First Wave at Omaha (Omaha West): Normandy, 1944. Early edition before CH went with ugly map panels. Three giant fold-out maps, 16 scenarios (scenario 16 is a monster ~35 turns), six counter sheets, and play aids. No campaign game but still epic. Always wanted to play it just for the experience. Maybe someday with Scott.
- Omaha East (Boxed Edition): Normandy, 1944. This was the item I really wanted, but had to buy the entire bundle to get it. Rare-ish, great condition. Never punched. Fold-out matte maps you can actually use. I’m going to do a full unboxing of this one soon.
13-ish items, $200. Pristine Omaha West and Omaha East boxed edition. A bunch of rare PTO and Normandy stuff. Honestly? I could probably flip of the Omaha West and cover most of the haul. Some duplicates might get sold or even given away. Keep an eye out. Unboxings coming soon. Let me know in the comments if this was a good deal or not.
