In August, 1942 U.S. Marines of the 1st Marine Division captured the islands of Tulagi, Gavutu, and Tanambogo among which the Japanese Navy had constructed a naval and seaplane base.
Resolving to fight to the death, Major General Shigemi ordered his forces to dig in at San Manuel, Philippines.
On July 21, 1942, Japanese forces landed on the northern Papuan coast around Buna and Gona, as part of a plan to capture the strategically important town of Port Moresby via an overland advance along the Kokoda Track.
