  1. I wrote an article on the roles of leaders in ASL. It was prompted by a discussion on Discord with JRV. In my opinion, leaders have the following roles:

Leaders in ASL have five primary roles:
    — Rallying Broken Units
    — Fire Direction
    — “Steadying” positions (think passing MC in critical Locations)
    — Mobility (added MF for Infantry stacked with them)
    — Deploy/Recombine

Leaders in ASL have some secondary roles:
    — Manning weapons requiring Elite units
    — Cutting Rout paths of Enemy Units
    — “Bump” scouting
    — Other Single Man Counter Abuse Options
    — Nationality Characteristics (Banzai, Human Wave, etc)

Of these roles, Rallying Broken units is the single-most important thing a leader can do in ASL. On the attack, rallying units keeps the momentum of your attack. On defense, rallying units provides depth and staying power of your bulwark. There is a reason I almost ALWAYS move my leaders last on the attack. Being able to read the map before the RPh and having a good idea of where every broken unit is going to end up is the key to keeping your momentum on the attack. It’s easier on defense, but even then, you should always have a plan for where a unit is going to rout and a leader sitting there to bring the lads back into the line.

Very interesting topic. I could (and have!) speak at length about this.

    • Great post. I need to incorporate some of these into my play. I’m usually the player putting every leader with a negative DRM on the front line, instead of reinforcing the “bulwark.”

  2. Great first podcast, I really enjoyed it and like the concept. I hope this goes on as there is a lot of good discussion. Added to my podcast subscriptions. The only observation I have is that one of the speakers, Scott I believe, has some audio issues and cut out a fair bit. Anyways thanks for the entertaining discussion.
