The Advanced Squad Leader Companion is a labor of love by ASL veteran Jim Stahler. From what I’ve heard, he’s been working on it for decades and has decided now is the time to release it to the ASL players, hobbyists, and collectors. I’ve also heard that his “magnum opus” weighs in at thousands of pages, perhaps as many as 6,000 pages. 😲

Le France Tireur (LFT) has stepped up and decided to publish it in magazine format, with each issue containing one (or more) of the 90 chapters in the Companion. This first issue (No. 1) contains only two chapters

– Chapter 1 Welcome to Advanced Squad Leader
– Chapter 2 Warriors and Weapons

and clocks in at 100 pages, cover-to-cover. The cost of this issue is $45. So if we do some back of the envelope extrapolation (the best we can do at this point), the entire Companion could come in at ~4,000 pages and cost several thousand dollars.

Again, this is purely a guess, but the undertaking is no small task! Whether we see the entire thing eventually published in print form is another guess. Only time will tell.

In this overview video I show you the entire contents of the Companion and give my opinions on what it contains.

  1. Hi. Thank you for the video. Initially I was quite excited about this but in the end, like you, I’m left scratching my head as to who it’s for. As you say, it’s not for experienced players but I can’t see that casual players or those, like me, looking to move up (or across?) from ASLSK will have much use for it, as what we really need are tutorials, of which there are plenty. Who is going to read the rules, set up a few counters, and then read this afterwards? Jim says it’s not a replacement for the rulebook so what is it for?

    • Issue 2 is a bit better (video coming tomorrow). It has a lot of examples about LOS which will be helpful for a lot of players. But I honestly think these magazines are primarily for collectors.
