The Battle of Mokra – In the early morning of September 1st, 1939 Germany initiated the invasion of Poland. While the invasion itself was not a surprise, the speed of the ‘blitzkrieg’ was, even to the Poles who were prepared for the invasion as best as possible.
As the Russian 8th Guards Army was expanding its bridgehead on the Vistula, they met with stiff German resistance. The Germans mounted a number of counterattacks in an effort to eliminate the Russian toehold on the west bank.
