Heat of Battle was the first third-party publisher to produce an ASL module that included a historical map, and it was among the first third-party publishers to produce professionally manufactured die-cut counters. Around the turn of the millennium, Heat of Battle also became the first third-party publisher to release mounted geomorphic mapboards, doing so in the scenario pack High Ground!.

In addition to being mounted, the two geomorphic maps in High Ground! introduced a design approach not previously attempted by the official ASL publishers, Avalon Hill and Multi-Man Publishing. While the maps retain standard geomorphic edges on three sides, they are designed to join along one edge to form a single, continuous large (4 level) hill complex. When reversed, the boards can instead form a comparable valley feature. By contrast, most geomorphic maps in Advanced Squad Leader, ASL Starter Kit, and other third-party products are self-contained in their major terrain features, aside from the use of woods half-hexes. The High Ground! boards have been noted for their rendering and production quality, which compares favorably with official geomorphic mapboards.
