God Save the King (GStK) was Heat of Battle’s debut historical module, covering the struggle at the north end of Arnhem Bridge during Market-Garden. In fact, it was one of the first historical modules, preceded only by Red Barricades and Kampfgruppe Pieper. When compared to Critical Hit’s Arnhem: The Third Bridge (or any of the other various names put to it over the years) and MMP’s A Bridge Too Far, GStK looks and reads more like an early draft, one hastily thrown together based on a good idea, but incomplete in execution. The v1.0 presentation and quality is … rough. But that’s what was expected in the early 1990s world of third-party ASL.

The misconception is that HOB later sold GStK to MMP, which converted it into A Bridge Too Far (1999), similar to what they did with Blood Reef: Tarawa. But that’s not the case here. GStK heavily influenced the later MMP module, but is not a direct update of it.

God Save the King (HOB, 1994)

GStK’s earliest printing (v1.0 shown here) used cut-and-assemble map panels and arrived with errata; rules and CG procedures were revised repeatedly, and the later edition (notably the version with the single-sheet map and standardized hex numbering) is the one most worth having from a player perspective. The campaign system borrows the Red Barricades while adding movement ideas intended to capture Arnhem’s block-to-block fighting. Most of the scenarios lean towards the smallish size, with only one large scenario (GSTK 7 “Raus!”) using the entire map.

v1.0 Map (HOB)

Speaking of the map, it’s quite ugly… well, the v1.0 map is, anyway. It wasn’t until v4.0 that the map was significantly improved, moving to a single sheet fold-out version and ditching the clunky panels.

If given the option, go with the later revision … it’s the corrected, “final” version, not this messy first run that will only appeal to collectors. GStK matters most today because it was an early third-party HASL that helped pave the way for better, more polished historical modules that came afterward.
