Old Squad Leader Player full of questions

Post by lvet »

Greetings from Spain, :D

I used to play the original Squad Leader during the 80s when I was a teenager.

I would like to get back to this wonderful game but I am facing few challenges. I have several question
1) The standard Advanced Squad Leader box set is really difficult to find. It looks like it has been discontinued. Is it still the default way to get to the game?
2) Similar thing for the ASL Starter Kits. I found the starter kit set #2 on Amazon but apparently you need #1 to "start"
3) Is there a way to play solo or to play remotely with another player.

Cheers
Luca

Welcome here !
VASSAL (vassalengine.org) and the VASL module allow to play online.

When you say "standard" do you mean non-Starter Kit (full ASL)? You need at least two things to start:
  • Rulebook
  • Beyond Valor (has complete German and Russian orders of battle)
Both of these are in print. The rulebook can also be purchased as a pdf that has free updates:

You do need SK1 to start, and it should be in print.

BUT, you can download the entire (SK1-SK4) rules here:
https://mmpgamers.com/support/aslsk/ASL ... ay2020.pdf

Then you can play remotely using the Vassal engine with the VASL module as mentioned. Another option is to find a used copy of SK1.

Vassal/VASL (see the tutorials):
https://asl-players.net/vasl-101-videos/

Here's an example of live Vassal/VASL play for a 3-player scenario we played. We were all in other parts of the country (U.S.)

Hi Neal,
Thanks for your answers. It's all clear now.
I initially thought that the rules where included in a boxset, a bit like in the old SL (I was wrong).

I purchased the following:
1) pdf instructions
2) ASL starter kit 1
3) ASL starter kit 2
4) Beyond Valor

This will keep me busy for a while before I start using VASL :-)
Still not sure on how you can play solo. I guess there is no computer generated opponent on VASL.

Thanks again

No, Vassal/VASL is simply a digital tabletop to for people to play different boardgames on. But it's very popular for players who don't have face to face opponents nearby. It's also great for playing large scenarios or campaign games as you don't need to leave a board with hundreds of counters setup in your home. :D
