Probationer Newbie Question

I learned to play the original SL, many many years ago. COVID made me look at ASL SK and I have invested heavily, but one thing haunts me and I think it's a kick back to the days when I was first shown the game.
Movement of a stack on MMCs, let's say 3 of them. If they are all moving (together) from open hexes A1 to A5 (4 MPs), do they move as a stack or is it "the done thing" on occasion to move them one at a time to see if any individual MMC takes fire? To me the rules don't talk of it not being allowed, therefore it is. (Do what the rules say, not what they don't say).

Hi boxroom, and welcome to the site!

You can move units (MMC, HS, SMC, vehicles, etc, in any order you want. The important thing is that once a unit is done moving ... it's done moving, you can't go back to it, you can't save MPs and return to that unit and move them more.

So the stack of 3 MMCs you mention can be moved as follows, in any direction, up to their available MF:

• A stack of three in one move.
• Move 2 MMCs, then move 1 MMC.
• Move 1 MMC, then move 2 MMCs.
• Move 1 MMC, then another MMC, then the final MMC.

The last option obviously takes longer, but introduces less risk to your units.

The mechanics of movement and defensive fire in ASL discourages moving units as stacks unless you have good terrain (ie. good TEM against fire) and/or good leadership with them. Figuring out when to move units as a stack comes with experience, but even then you'll make questionable choices.

It is kind of a lifestyle, but the system is so deep it's a game you can spend a lifetime on because it's so varied and has literally many thousands of scenarios.
