This module/pack has been around the block a few times. It originally hit the scene back in 2004 via Heat of Battle. Bounding Fire updated it and dropped a second edition in 2009, with this specific printing being from 2022. Primarily designed by Chas Smith, this pack focuses entirely on the brutal, claustrophobic fighting just inland from the Normandy beaches in June and July of 1944. Expect a lot of dense bocage, light bocage, and classic hedge combat featuring American, British, and Candian forces squaring off against the Germans and the SS.

You’re not getting a huge rulebook here. The rules for BtB2 are only about a page, covering the essentials for Bounding Fire’s specific terrain like bocage, bocage vertices, line of sight, and slopes. You’ll need a hefty stack of core modules to actually play these, though. Make sure you have Beyond Valor, Yanks, For King and Country, Pegasus Bridge, Kampfgruppe Peiper, Doomed Battalions, and Bounding Fire’s own Operation Cobra handy to supply the necessary counters, rules, and boards. But for most ASL veterans this shouldn’t be a problem.

You get four geomorphic BFP boards labeled C, D, E, and F. Boards C, D, and E are packed with thick bocage, stone buildings, small hills, and/or orchards, while board F opens things up a bit with more open ground and low hills. In fact, there are no hills on the boards (not including the overlays) above Level 1, so aside from a couple of sunken road hexes, these could theoretically be used for Starter Kit designs.

The real magic happens with the overlays. You get two standard small overlays, but the main attraction to the terrain here is the three massive, 8″x13″ half-board overlays. You align them with hex row K on boards C, D, and E to completely transform the battlefield. You can snap an overlay down and instantly turn a simple board into a massive, dense stone village or bocage-riddled hill. Between the four core boards and these massive overlays, you get around ten completely different map combinations to play on. These overlays will work with some of the stock MMP geoboards, but I’ve not tested them on every layout.

The pack includes 16 historically accurate scenarios, and the best part is that every single scenario actually uses the included boards. Sometimes third-party publishers throw in a custom map and only use it for one or two setups, but Bounding Fire makes sure you get your money’s worth out of these boards.

The setups range from tight infantry-only slugfests to intense combined arms warfare featuring Churchills, Crocodiles, and Stugs. There’s a ton of variety here, from standard US Paratrooper assaults to massive British armor pushes.

Unfortunately, there is no box included with this module, but that is pretty standard for most third-party publishers these days outside of Advancing Fire. Still, if you are a fan of the Western Front, D-Day, and intense hedgerow fighting, this is a fantastic addition to the collection that will keep your gaming table busy for a long time.
