Orchards, Hills & Hindrances. Starter Kit Example #1 from the rulebook. In an attempt to help out new and existing Starter Kit players I’m going to work through every example from the ASL Starter Kit rulebook. These snapshots are mere summaries/examples and are NOT meant as exhaustive replacements for reading the relevant rule sections.

The terrain in ASL generally impacts the game in two ways:

    • Obstructions: which completely blocks LOS
    • Hindrances: which limits/hinders LOS

Orchards are a unique terrain that can obstruct or hinder LOS depending on the date of the scenario and the elevation difference between the firer’s hex and the target’s hex. Let’s take a look at how orchards and elevation (hills) work in ASL Starter Kit.

In Season Orchards

Below is a situation where orchards are in season (the scenario takes place in the months April-October, inclusive). During these months the orchard limbs are heavy with leaves and possibly some variety of fruit. Same-level LOS (one that goes beneath the limbs) is only hindered, while LOS that is traced between differing elevations is blocked due to the foliage.

In Season Orchard. Notice you can see through the orchard at ground level (hindered), but you cannot see any elevation beyond the orchard (obstructed).

Out of Season Orchards

Below is a situation where orchards are OUT of season (the scenario takes place in the months November-March, inclusive). During these months the orchard limbs are bare of foliage. You can see through them, but the view is hindered … and the amount of hindrance increases with how many orchard hexes the LOS crosses. Same level LOS is hindered the same whether an orchard is in season or out of season.

  1. Neal – excellent video; I really like your idea of good thru the SK rule book and doing a video for each of the examples. Believe that will be very well received by new players.
