Advanced Squad Leader Live Stream: Aiding the Local Constabulary (J164)

Here’s the historical situation:

Date: March 29, 1941
Location:
Dire Dawa, Ethiopia
Faction 1:
Italian (Mutineers) (XL Battaglione Fanteria Coloniale, XVII Brigata Coloniale, Africa Orientale Italiana)
Faction 2: Italian (Dire Dawa Colonial police Garrison with Assistant Governor and Escorting Police and 1st Battalion)
Faction 3: South Africans ( Transvaal Scottish, 1st South African Infantry Brigade Group)

The days of Africa Orientale Italiana were finally coming to a close in Abyssinia, as South African and Nigerian forces continued a now largely-unopposed advance to Addis Ababa. Italian colonial forces were deserting and surrendering en masse, in embarrassing numbers. On the evening of 28 March, elements of two battalions of the XVII Colonial Brigade began to mutiny.

Purpose designed three player scenarios are rare in Advanced Squad Leader. Almost any scenario can be adapted to be multi-player where one player takes control of the armor of the side he’s playing on, or takes control of reinforcements coming on board. But there are only a handful of scenarios where three actual factions duke it out on the battlefield for supremacy, forming shaky and short lived alliances that can evaporate like a fart in the wind.

For our first three player experience we picked the oft recommended scenario Aiding the Local Constabulary (J164). Random selection determine the sides, with myself (Neal) getting the Italian mutineers (deserters), Scott getting the regular Italians, and Stew getting the South African peacekeepers coming in to break up the ruckus.

All three of us had a blast and highly recommend the three player experience, and this scenario in particular.

We livestreamed this game on multiple platforms* with a viewers popping in and out for most of the sessions. We will be doing this again for our next three player game. Parts 1 & 2 of the replay are below.

Enjoy!
