AAR by: Neal Ulen & Scott Rowland

Advanced Squad Leader AAR – The Art of Dying (J130).

Here’s the historical situation:

Attacker: Italian (Battaglione Alpini “Vestone,” 6° Reggimento Alpini and LXVII Battaglione Bersaglieri Corazzato)
Defender: Russian (14th Guards Rifle Division)

After a hard struggle, the Red Army had succeeded in establishing a significant bridgehead at Serafimovich, on the west bank of the Don. The German XVII Corps and the Italian XXXV Army Corps were assigned to a joint counterattack. At the crack of dawn, after a short artillery preparation and number of Stuka bombings, the confidant Italians attacked. Despite a hard defense, and significant Italian losses, the Russian lines were broken, and the defenders were forced to retreat. Later that day, the order was given that the secondary target of the attack, Kotovskij, was to be assaulted.
